Phases of the project

Property owner participation in the program is strictly voluntary, and the program is being made available at no cost participants or the community.

1. Sampling

Owners of eligible properties within the study area who have granted access for soil sampling will be contacted to schedule a sampling date.

During this phase, a hand-held soil coring device will be used to collect samples from small holes dug in various locations on your property. These samples will be taken from depths of 12 to 24 inches below the ground surface. Once collected, the core holes will be refilled with the original material or similar soil, and any disturbed vegetation will be restored.

The collected soil samples will then be sent for metals analysis to an independent laboratory approved by the Arizona Department of Environmental Equality (ADEQ).

2. Clean-up

Once sample results have been verified by the independent laboratory, a representative of the soil program will confidentially share the results with the property owner and advise whether the property is eligible for clean-up.

If your property is eligible for cleanup, a customized property cleanup plan will be developed to outline the specific areas for soil removal, excavation depth, and revegetation requirements. Before excavation begins, we will review this plan with you during a pre-excavation property inspection.

The cleanup plan will detail construction activities, including temporary relocation of items for access, designated excavation areas, and any landscaping features you do not want disturbed. The plan will also specify which landscaping will be removed and replaced, as well as any plants you request to be replanted.

Soil removal will only be scheduled once you have reviewed and agreed to the clean-up plan in writing, and all necessary permits have been obtained.
